Alissa Czisny (born June 25, 1987) is an American Figure skater. She is the 2009 and 2011 U.S. national champion, the 2005-2006 Skate Canada International gold medalist, and the 2004–2005, 2008-2009 season U.S. Collegiate Champion.
Biography[]
Skating[]
Alissa first garnered international attention in 2005 when she won Skate Canada International and placed second at Skate America. She qualified for the 2005–2006 Grand Prix Final and placed sixth. She went on to the 2006 U.S. Championships in St. Louis, where she was a heavy favorite to place in the top three. However, she fell multiple times and finished seventh overall.
She began the 2006-07 season at Skate Canada International where she placed fourth. She also competed at Cup of Russia in November. At the 2007 United States Figure Skating Championships she was in fifth after the short program, but went on to win the free skate to take the bronze medal and the final U.S. spot to the 2007 World Figure Skating Championships in Tokyo, Japan.
She finished third at the 2008 Skate Canada in the 2008–2009 Grand Prix of Figure Skating series behind Joannie Rochette and Fumie Suguri. In early 2009 she won the U.S. National Championships.
She is best known for her fast, well-positioned spins and graceful spirals. Unlike most skaters, Alissa spins and jumps clockwise. She has struggled with consistency in her jumps throughout her career.
Alissa formerly skated in Jackson Proflex hinged boots, and was the most successful skater to do so at the time. After the 2008 U.S. National Championships she switched to a custom-designed Jackson unhinged boot.[1]
Coaching and Choreography[]
Alissa works with a team of on-ice coaches, including Julianne Berlin, Yuka Sato, Natalia Deller, Brian Boitano, and Linda Leaver.
Her choreographers include David Wilson, Kurt Browning, and Lori Nichol.[2]
Personal life[]
Alissa is a student at Bowling Green State University on a full academic scholarship; she is studying international studies, Russian and French.[3] She expects to graduate in May 2009.[1]
Her fraternal twin sister, Amber, is also a figure skater. The two began skating as toddlers when their mother took them with her to the skating rink.[3] Both teach figure skating, and Amber helps to coach Alissa.[1]
Alissa's hobbies incude rockwall climbing, reading, ballet, rollerblading, biking, 3-D Art and playing the piano.[2]. She has also worked as a model for companies such as Mondor and MAC.[1]
She was one of four up-and-coming figure skaters featured on the 2006 TLC (TV channel) series, Ice Diaries.
